I found a beautiful pattern book for kids in Kinokuniya, Shinjuku (an 8 floor bookstore, mind you), and chose a summer jacket. But to go buying some new fabrics, I have to take Sidra with me since it's already summer holiday. The problem is, Sidra is very prone to heatstroke because he sweats very little (I believe it's a genetic condition from me). We just can't go out when it's too hot, otherwise our body temperatures will rise up too quickly. Anyway, I had to make use of what I had at home. Fortunately I have this 10 metres of cheap cotton fabric that I bought in Shinjuku. When I was in fashion school, we used to buy bulks of this fabrics and used them to make a 'toile' (French word) to test or develop a pattern. These fabrics were very comfortable, made of natural fibers, with interesting faded colors due to dust and sunlight from being hung on the wall. I chose another pattern from the pattern book I bought the other day. It was simpler than <a href="http://verypurpleperson.multiply.com/photos/album/185">the previous dress</a>, but turned out a bit more complicated in the making because I used binding to finish the armholes and necklines. I added a line of thin lace that I bought in <a href="http://www.yuzawaya.co.jp/">Yuzawaya</a> to the neckline. But I didn't have enough time to go to Yuzawaya to browse on some fabrics. So I took a look around the house and saw that red fabric hanging on the wall. It was cotton, so it would be perfect for a summer dress. I was too lazy to make patterns from scratch, so I went to the nearest bookstore and bought a pattern book. The pattern that I chose was very simple, with wide neck opening and loose fitting, eliminating the need for buttons or zipper that I didn't have anyway. I added two pockets on the side-seams because I just love dresses with side-seam pockets. The raw edges are finished with zigzag stitches. The dress turned out cute, almost nightgown-like, which I really like. Working time: exactly 4 hours, from 11am - 3pm. My husband found out that there is a small city called <a href="http://www.sakaiminato.net/site2/page/foreign/eng/kitaro/">Sakaiminato</a> in Tottori prefecture; that is the birthplace of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Mizuki">Shigeru Mizuki</a>, the author of a famous Japanese horror manga titled <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ge_Ge_Ge_no_Kitaro">GeGeGe no Kitaro</a>. The festival is based on the Legend of Tanabata and celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). They are two lovers separated by a river of stars (the Milky way), and can only meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. People celebrate Tanabata by writing wishes or poetry on a small piece of paper and hanging them on bamboo trees. The bamboo trees were also decorated with origami and other paper decorations. This is Sidra's bamboo trees with his own handmade paper decorations and wishes that he made at school. To my surprise, he didn't shed a single tear when I left him in school this morning. Just a little clutch on my sleeves, a bit of sweet talk from the teacher (in Japanese, which neither of us could understand anyway), and off he went to play with other kids. I thought I almost burst out with pride.
